Guns can be very dangerous, especially for younger children who don’t know what they can do. Safety preparations need to be taken when a gun is stored in your home. It is important to take extra precautions to reduce the risk of injury or death if your firearm is fired.

Always treat firearms as if they are loaded. Accidents often happen when people believe a gun is unloaded when it is actually loaded. A good rule of thumb is to treat a gun carefully even when you are sure it isn’t loaded.

Locks make it hard to fire a gun, but sometimes they can malfunction and a gun can still be loaded and shot with the locked trigger. Locks are meant only to add to safety precautions. They aren’t always reliable, so they shouldn’t be the only form of protection you have against them being used.

Children need to be supervised very closely whenever the gun is not stored and locked away. Educate your children on gun safety and the importance to not play with firearms. Explain to them why they shouldn’t ever handle a gun, especially without being properly trained first.
